Railway Concession to Senior Citizen: The service of concessional tickets to senior citizens and other categories of passengers traveling by rail is not going to start at the moment. Railway, Communications and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has said in the Lok Sabha that in view of the Kovid epidemic and the Kovid protocol, the service of concessional tickets given to all passengers except four categories was withdrawn from 20 March 2020.
Question asked in Lok Sabha
TMC MP Nusrat Jahan had asked the Railway Minister whether the government is going to resume the subsidy given to senior citizens in railway tickets? Responding to this, the Railway Minister said that due to the pandemic covid protocol, the concessional ticket facility of railways being given for all categories except four categories of Divyangjan and 11 categories of patients and students has been withdrawn.
Rail travel expensive for the elderly
One, most senior citizens do not have a solid source of income. From that, after the start of the corono epidemic (Covid 19 Pandemic) in March 2020, the government has suspended the concessions given to them for traveling by rail, which is still in reality. Due to this, the elderly have to loosen their pockets more to travel by rail.
4 crore senior citizens did not get the concession
According to the information received from RTI recently, after the corona epidemic, about four crore senior citizens traveling by rail have to pay the full fare for their journey. Responding to an RTI, Railways has said that between March 22, 2020 to September 2021, three crore 78 lakh 50 thousand 668 (37,850,668) senior citizens have traveled in trains.
Earlier there was a discount on rail fare
Let us tell you that before March 2020, in the case of senior citizens, the railways used to give 50 percent discount to women and 40 percent to men for traveling by rail in all classes. The minimum age limit for availing this relaxation by the Railways was 58 for elderly women and 60 years for men.
Criticism of the decision of the Railways
There has also been sharp criticism of the Indian Railways’ decision to end the exemption for senior citizens. Despite this, the discounted tickets have not been reinstated. In the winter session, parliamentarians are constantly surrounding the government by answering questions from the Railway Minister regarding the restoration of concessional tickets.
